I have had a portfolio career in film and television. I now earn my living as a senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh as programme director of MSc Film, Exhibition & Curation. Writer of Crime
I won a school short story competition when I was 12 and have been writing ever since as a means to make sense of the world and allow my imagination to roam. Writing has always formed an element of my professional career as a director and producer of arts and factual television at the BBC and, later, as a freelance documentary filmmaker and teacher.
In between longish stints at the BBC and then the University of Edinburgh, where I currently work as a senior lecturer, I have been lucky enough to learn so much from working at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Fringe Festival Society, Assembly Theatre, The Edinburgh Book Festival and many other cultural events. As I have brought my focus back to novel writing in the last few years I have a wealth of material to draw from.
I spent a lot of my youth outdoors exploring hill and glen and feel enriched by the landscape and how it is always such a foundational element of much of my writing.
